A commonwealth realm is like a big family of countries that all share the same queen, kind of like how you and your cousins might all have the same grandma.
Imagine you have a favorite toy, and every time you play with it, you remember your grandma. Now imagine that toy was given to your cousin, and then to your uncle, and now everyone in the family has that toy, but they still all think of their grandma when they use it. That’s kind of what commonwealth realms are like.
How It Works
Each country in this big family is called a realm, and even though they have their own presidents or prime ministers, they all share the same queen (or king). Right now, that queen is Queen Elizabeth II, but when she passes on, her child might take over, just like how your grandma would pass the toy to you.
These countries are spread out across the world, from Australia and Canada to Jamaica and New Zealand. They all have their own rules and traditions, but they’re connected by this shared queen, like a big family with one special toy that reminds them of their grandma.
Examples
- A group of countries that all share a common head of state, like a big family with one leader.
- Imagine several friends who all have the same teacher, they are connected through that teacher.
- Countries linked together by having the same king or queen as their head of government.
