What are cloud classifications?

Clouds are like fluffy cookies in the sky, different kinds of clouds have special shapes and jobs depending on where they live and how they're made.

Cloud classifications are like sorting your toys into groups based on what they look like or how you play with them. Just as you might put all the cars together, or separate your blocks from your dolls, scientists sort clouds into types so they can understand how weather works.

Types of Clouds

There are three main cloud families:

  1. High-up clouds, These are thin and wispy, like cotton candy floating way above you.
  2. Middle clouds, These are puffier and more rounded, like clouds you might draw in a picture.
  3. Low clouds, These are big and heavy, like the ones that bring rain or snow.

Each family has different members with special names, just like how your family has mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. Scientists use these groups to help predict whether it will be sunny, rainy, or stormy outside!
