What are closer stars?

Closer stars are stars that are near to us, just like how your best friend is closer than someone you only see at school.

Imagine you're playing with toy blocks. If a block is right next to you, it’s easy to reach and move around, that's like a closer star. But if the block is way across the room, it’s harder to get to, that’s like a farther star.

How we know they're close

Scientists use special tools, kind of like how you might use a ruler to see which block is closer. If a star is close, its light seems brighter and changes more quickly than stars that are far away. It's like how your friend’s voice sounds louder and clearer than someone shouting from the other side of the playground.

Some examples

Our Sun is the closest star to us, and it’s right here in our solar system. Then we have Proxima Centauri, which is still super far, about 4 light-years away. That's like having a friend who lives on another planet! But even though Proxima Centauri is far, it's still closer than many other stars out there.

So, closer stars are just the ones that aren’t too far away, and we can see them more clearly!
