What are chord shapes?

Chord shapes are like fingerprints you press on your instrument to make music.

Imagine you're holding a guitar, and it's like a big keyboard, but instead of pressing keys, you press strings with your fingers. A chord shape is the way your fingers sit on those strings to create a harmony, which is like a group of notes playing together.

Like Building Blocks

Think of chord shapes as building blocks. Just like Legos can be used to build different things, chord shapes can help you make different songs. Some are simple, with just a few fingers; others use all your fingers on one hand, it’s like stacking lots of blocks at once!

Try It Out

If you press the first three strings with your index finger, and then hold the fourth string with your middle finger, that's a chord shape. Each time you move your fingers to different strings, you're making a new sound, like changing from one Lego tower to another.

You can use the same shape on different parts of the guitar, just like how you can move a Lego block around and still have it look cool in a new place!
