What are ceres?

Ceres is a big space rock that floats around in the solar system, kind of like how your toy car floats around on the floor when you push it.

What makes Ceres special?

Imagine you have a giant chocolate chip cookie, that’s sort of what Ceres looks like. It's one of the biggest space rocks we know about, and it's so far out that it lives in the asteroid belt, which is like a busy highway between Mars and Jupiter.

Ceres is also a bit like a planet

Even though Ceres is a space rock, it’s not just any old rock. It has craters on its surface, kind of like when you drop your cookie on the floor and it cracks. And some scientists think there might be water ice hiding inside it, just like how sometimes you find frozen treats inside a bigger treat.

Ceres is fun to imagine because it's not too far from Earth, but still feels very far away, kind of like your favorite toy that lives in another room.
