What are carriages?

A carriage is like a special wagon that people ride in on horses or other animals.

Imagine you're playing outside and you have a toy wagon. You pull it with your feet, and your stuffed animal rides inside. A carriage is kind of like that, but much bigger, and instead of you pulling it, big strong horses do the pulling!

How Carriages Work

Carriages have wheels, just like wagons. They’re usually made of wood or other materials that are strong enough to hold people. Sometimes they're pulled by one horse, sometimes by two or even more.

When a carriage moves, it goes vroom-vroom over the road, not with an engine, but with the help of a horse walking or running.

Inside a Carriage

Inside a carriage, there are seats where people sit. It’s like a little room that moves along with you. Sometimes kings and queens used to ride in fancy carriages when they went on trips!

So next time you see a picture of a horse pulling a big wooden wagon, remember, that's a carriage!
