What are bird feathers?

Bird feathers are like special clothes that help birds fly and stay warm.

Imagine you're wearing a coat made of little straws, each straw is a feather. These straws come in all shapes and sizes, and they’re really light. Birds use these feathers to move through the air easily, just like how you can run faster when you wear light shoes instead of heavy ones.

How Feathers Work

Feathers are attached to birds’ bodies with a little stem, kind of like a hair on your head but much stronger. When birds flap their wings, these feathers help them push through the air and glide smoothly, it’s like using big, soft fans to help you fly!

Some feathers are soft and fluffy, like a blanket, which helps keep birds warm when it's cold outside. Others are pointy and strong, helping birds catch food or fight off enemies.

Birds also use their feathers to show off! When they're happy or trying to find a partner, they might puff up their feathers, it’s like wearing a big, colorful costume!
