What are big waves?

Big waves are giant ripples on the water that look like mountains moving toward you.

Imagine you're at the beach, and instead of little ripples from your toes in the sand, the whole ocean is pushing up a huge hill of water, that’s a big wave!

How Big Waves Happen

Big waves start with wind. Just like when you blow on a lake to make it ripple, strong wind can push water for a long time and over a large area. The longer and harder the wind blows, the bigger the waves get.

Sometimes, these waves travel across the whole ocean before they reach your shore, just like how a message in a bottle could go from one side of the world to another!

What Makes Waves Feel Big

When you’re on a boat or standing at the beach, big waves feel stronger and taller than little ones. They can even splash up and wet your feet, or knock you over if they're really huge!

So next time you see a wave coming, think of it as a giant water hill rushing toward you from far away! 🌊
