What are arthropods?

Arthropods are animals with strong, outside skeletons and lots of jointed legs, just like your toy robot or a friendly insect you see in the park.

Like a Tiny Robot with a Shell

Think about your favorite toy, maybe it has arms and legs that move. Arthropods are kind of like those toys! They have hard shells on their bodies, which act like armor to protect them. These shells are made of a special material called chitin, which is tough but also light.

Moving with Joints

Arthropods have many jointed legs, just like you have joints in your arms and legs that let you move around. They can walk, run, fly, or even swim. You might see them buzzing around you (like a bee) or crawling on the floor (like an ant).

Some arthropods are really small, like dust mites, while others are big, like crabs and spiders. All of them have that special outside shell and lots of legs, making them one of the most common types of animals in the world!
