What are angle measures?

Angle measures tell us how much space is between two lines that meet at a point, like the corners of your favorite toy box.

Imagine you're playing with a protractor, which is like a special ruler for angles. It helps you see how wide or narrow an angle is.

Like Stretching a String

Think about opening and closing a door. When it’s fully open, that's a big angle, maybe 180 degrees, like a straight line. When it's just a little bit open, that's a small angle, maybe 30 degrees, like the tip of a slice of pizza.

The Protractor is Your Helper

A protractor has numbers from 0 to 180, like a ruler but for angles. You put it on the corner where two lines meet, and then you see how many degrees are between them, just like measuring how long a pencil is with a ruler!

So angle measures help us know how open or closed something is, using numbers we can count and compare.

Examples

  1. A pizza cut into 8 slices has an angle measure of 45 degrees for each slice.
  2. When you look at a clock, the hands form different angles depending on the time.
  3. A right angle is like the corner of a square or rectangle.
