What are achromatic colors?

Achromatic colors are colors that don’t have any color, they’re just shades of gray or white.

Imagine you have a box of crayons, but all you get is white and black. If you mix those together in different amounts, you can make gray too! That’s what achromatic colors are like, they're made only from white, black, and gray.

Like a Ruler for Colors

Think about how a ruler measures length. It has numbers that go from 0 to the full length. Achromatic colors work kind of like a ruler, but for brightness instead of length. Black is like 0, it’s not bright at all. White is like the highest number, it's super bright. And gray is just somewhere in between, depending on how much white and black you mix.

Why Achromatic Colors Are Cool

Achromatic colors are used a lot in art, design, and even your favorite clothes! They're simple but can make things look elegant or calm, like when you wear a gray sweater or see a black-and-white photo. You might not notice them at first, but they’re there, helping to make everything look just right. Achromatic colors are colors that don’t have any color, they’re just shades of gray or white.
