What are abstract individuals?

Abstract individuals are like imaginary friends who help us understand big ideas by acting out parts of them.

Imagine you have a bag full of different colored marbles, red, blue, green, and yellow. Each marble is a real thing, something you can pick up and feel. Now imagine that each color represents a group of people with similar traits or jobs, like all the kids in your class who love drawing. An abstract individual is like picking out one special marble, say, the red one, to represent all the red marbles, just so you can talk about them more easily.

When we use abstract individuals

Sometimes, when there are too many people or things to count, we use abstract individuals to simplify what's going on. It’s like using a single toy car to stand in for all the cars in your toy box, you don’t need every car to explain that you're playing "race time."

Think of it as giving a name and face to something huge or complicated, just so it's easier to talk about. That red marble isn't every red marble, but it helps us understand what all the red ones have in common, like how they're special, or maybe how they're used in games.
