What are ablative tiles?

Ablative tiles are special shields that help protect spaceships from hot things.

Imagine you're playing with a toy rocket and you're outside on a sunny day. The sun is really bright, and it can make your skin feel warm, or even burn it if you stay too long in the sunlight. Now imagine your rocket is flying close to something super hot, like a fireball from another spaceship. That heat could damage the rocket.

That's where ablative tiles come in! They're like a protective layer on the outside of the spaceship, kind of like the skin of a superhero. When the heat hits them, they start to get hot and sometimes even burn or melt a little bit, but they do their job: they take the heat away from the spaceship, so it doesn't get damaged.

Think of it like putting on a thick coat when you're going outside in winter, it keeps you warm by trapping the heat. Ablative tiles work kind of the opposite way: they trap the heat and let it go away slowly, protecting what's inside.

These tiles are super important for spaceships that fly really fast or near hot things, like going to the moon or flying through a fireball in space!
