Was Pac-man originally named "Puck-man"?

Pac-Man was originally named "Puck-Man", but that name got changed before it became famous.

Imagine you're eating a big, juicy pizza. You take one bite and it's gone, poof! That’s what happened to the name "Puck-Man". It wasn’t quite right for the game because "Pac-Man" sounded more fun and exciting. Think of it like choosing between two ice cream flavors: one is plain vanilla, and the other is chocolate chip, you pick the one that makes your mouth go “Mmm!”.

Why did they change the name?

When the game was first made, "Puck-Man" meant something else in Japanese. It had to do with a word for "eating." But when people outside of Japan saw it, they thought "Pac-Man" sounded better, like someone saying "I’m going to eat!" with a big smile on their face.

So the name got changed, just like you might rename your favorite toy if it didn’t feel right anymore. And that’s how we got "Pac-Man", the game everyone loves!
