The Tragedy of the Commons: Why Shared Resources Always Run Out

Imagine a big green field where everyone’s cows can graze for free. This is the commons. If you add one cow, you get more milk and cheese, so it seems like a good idea. But if everyone else adds their cows too, the grass gets eaten faster than it grows. Soon, there is no food left for anyone.

The Problem

The sad part is that every person acting in their own best interest ends up ruining the resource for all of us. It does not matter if you are kind; your neighbor needs to feed their family. When thousands of people make this same choice, the field turns into a muddy wasteland.

How to Fix It

We can stop the tragedy by setting rules. We might charge a fee for each cow or limit how many animals can eat at once. Another way is to let the community decide together who gets to use the land and when. This helps keep the grass healthy so everyone has food tomorrow, not just today.
