The Ship of Theseus: Are You the Same Person?

Imagine your favorite teddy bear. It was stuffed with soft cotton when you were born. Every year, a piece falls out or gets sewn back in. Eventually, almost all the original cotton is gone. Is it still your teddy bear? Yes! Because it never stopped being your bear.

This same thing happens to humans. Our bodies are like the teddy bear. Old cells die and new ones grow. After ten years, most of the material in your body is different from what it was before. But you feel like the same person.

The Core Question

How can something change its parts but stay the same thing?

There are two main ideas:

  • The Body View: You are your physical self. If we rebuild your body piece by piece, you remain you as long as nothing breaks suddenly.
  • The Story View: You are your memories and personality. Even if we move your brain into a new robot body, you would still be you because your story continues.

So, are you the same person? The answer depends on whether you care more about your stuff or your story. Most people choose the story.
