Saturated - Unsaturated- and Supersaturated Solutions- What is the difference?

A solution is like a juice box, it’s when one thing (like sugar) dissolves into another (like water), making something new.

What's a Saturated Solution?

Imagine your juice box is full, and you can’t squeeze any more syrup in. That’s a saturated solution, it has as much stuff dissolved in it as it can hold. Like when you keep adding sugar to your water until no more will dissolve.

What's an Unsaturated Solution?

Now imagine your juice box isn’t full yet, there’s still room for more syrup. That’s an unsaturated solution, it hasn't reached its limit and can take in more stuff, like adding a little more sugar to your water.

What's a Supersaturated Solution?

This one is extra special! Imagine you shake up the juice box really hard and somehow manage to squeeze more syrup in than it should hold. That’s a supersaturated solution, it has more stuff dissolved in it than it usually can, like when you cool down sweetened water so fast that it holds more sugar than it normally would.

You might have seen this happen with rock candy or even when making ice cream! A solution is like a juice box, it’s when one thing (like sugar) dissolves into another (like water), making something new.

Examples

  1. A glass of water with sugar dissolves until no more can go in, that's saturated. If you add a little more, it becomes supersaturated.
  2. When you make lemonade and keep adding sugar until the bottom settles, the solution is saturated.
  3. Putting salt into boiling pasta water makes it unsaturated because it can still take more salt.
