Why Do We Nostalgically Forget the Bad Times?

What Happens

Imagine you just got back from a vacation. The flight was late, your hotel room smelled like old socks, and it rained on the second day. Right now, you are annoyed.

The Fading Filter

But next year, when you look at your photos, those problems seem to disappear. You remember the sunny beach and the good food. Your brain is like a messy artist who paints over the ugly spots after a while.

Why It Matters

This is called rosy retrospection. Our brains are wired to keep our spirits up by forgetting the tiny hurts. If we remembered every little annoyance forever, life would feel very heavy. So, we choose to remember the love and leave behind the grumpiness.
