Why Did Roman Soldiers Carry Two Straws?

Imagine you are walking in the hot sun. You have a canteen with water. But what if there is a tiny bug floating in it? Or a speck of dust? Roman soldiers solved this problem by carrying a special drinking tool that looked like two straws taped together.

One straw was used for drinking. When you put your mouth on it, the water flows up easily. The other straw had a small hole near the top or a flap made of leather. This second straw acted like a filter. If you tilted your canteen too far, water would spill out the side but not through the main drinking tube. It was like having two ways to get liquid without getting messy.

The Romans were smart. They knew that dirty water could make people sick. By using a separate channel for air or overflow, they kept the fresh water clean inside the bottle. This simple trick helped them stay strong on long battles and marches across Europe.
