The transatlantic slave trade was when people were taken from one place and forced to work far away.

What it looked like

Imagine you're playing with your friends in the park, but suddenly someone grabs you and takes you to a different city, and you can’t go back home for years. That’s what happened to many people during the transatlantic slave trade. They were taken from Africa across the ocean to work on big farms or buildings in places like America, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The journey was tough

They traveled in crowded ships, sometimes with no food or water. It felt like being stuck in a really tight toy box for days, that’s how hard the trip could be. When they finally arrived, many were tired, sick, or even hurt. But they still had to work very hard, often doing jobs that were not fair.

Why it happened

People who ran the trade wanted money, and they needed workers to help them make more money. That’s why so many people from Africa were taken, because they were seen as a way to get rich.
