Why we use metaphors
Metaphors make tricky ideas easier by comparing them to things we already know.
- If you're feeling tired, someone might say you're like a sleepy turtle. Turtles are slow when they're sleepy, so that helps you picture how tired you feel.
- When the sky is bright and blue, people sometimes say it's like a big happy painting, something colorful and cheerful you see every day.
How metaphors work in real life
Think of your favorite toy or snack. If someone says your happiness is like eating a giant chocolate bar, they’re using something familiar (chocolate) to show how happy you are. You don’t need magic, just a tasty comparison!
Examples
- A metaphor helps you understand something by comparing it to another thing, like saying 'time is a thief' to show how time takes things away from us.
