Why Does Rain Smell Like Earth?

Have you ever smelled that fresh, earthy smell right after it rains when the ground has been dry for a while? That special scent is called petrichor.

It happens because of tiny things in the dirt. Plants make sticky oils to protect themselves from sun and bugs. These oils get trapped in the soil over time. When rain falls, those oils are splashed into tiny droplets in the air. We breathe them in and smell a "fresh" scent.

There is another secret helper: bacteria living in the dirt. They make a sticky substance that smells musky. Rain wakes these up too! Scientists found out this long ago. It seems like the earth is exhaling after holding its breath during dry days.
