MESOPOTAMIA | What is a civilization?

A civilization is like a big, smart neighborhood where people live together and do cool things every day.

Imagine you have a toy box full of different toys, some are blocks, some are cars, some are action figures. A civilization is kind of like that toy box, but with real people. In Mesopotamia, which was an ancient place between two big rivers called the Tigris and Euphrates, people built cities, wrote stories on clay tablets, made tools from stone, and even had a way to keep track of time.

What Makes a Civilization?

A civilization has a few important things:

  • People living in cities, like how you live with your friends in a house.
  • Writing so they could remember their stories or trade with others, kind of like leaving notes for each other.
  • Tools and jobs that help everyone work together, just like when you have different people making lunch, cleaning up, and playing games.

In Mesopotamia, people also made laws to keep things fair and started farming so they could grow food. That way, they didn’t need to move around all the time, it was like having a big, cozy home with everything they needed!
