What Is Free Will?
Imagine you want a cookie. You reach for it because you want it. That feels like free will. But what if your brain decided you wanted the cookie half a second before you knew you did?
The Brain's Head Start
Scientists put people in machines that listen to their brains. They ask them to press a button whenever they feel like it. The machine shows that electrical signals start moving toward the hand before the person says, "I will press now." It is like your brain sends a text message before you read it.
Does It Matter?
If your body does the choosing first, are you still free? Maybe not in the way we think. But you can still feel good about your choices. The feeling of deciding is real even if the decision happened earlier. It is like a dance where you lead but follow the music.
