If a Tree Falls Unheard, Does It Make a Sound?

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, it still makes a sound because sound happens when things move through air.

Imagine you're playing with your blocks. When you knock them over, they clatter, that's a sound. But if you knock them over while your brother is taking a nap and he doesn’t wake up, he doesn't hear the clatter. Still, the blocks made noise when they fell.

How Sound Works

When the tree falls, it shakes the air around it. That shaking goes through the air like ripples in water, these are called sound waves. Even if no one is there to hear them, those waves still happen.

It's like when you're in a room and you tap your foot on the floor. You can feel the floor shake under your feet. If someone else was in the room, they’d also feel it, or maybe even hear it if they were listening closely. But if no one is there, it’s still a real shake.

So just because no one hears the tree fall doesn’t mean the sound isn't real, it's just waiting for someone to come along and catch it!
