Finding a percentage is like slicing a whole pizza into 100 tiny, equal pieces. The word percent literally means "out of one hundred." To work it out fast, you just need to find that 100th slice first, then multiply by the number of slices you want.
The 10% Shortcut
The easiest trick is finding 10 percent. Why? Because moving the decimal point one spot to the left gives you 10% instantly. For example, 10% of $50 is just $5.00. It’s like taking one big chunk off the top.
Building the Rest
Once you have 10%, you can build other percentages by adding or multiplying.
- 20% is just two of those 10% chunks ($5 + $5 = $10).
- 5% is half of the 10% chunk ($5 / 2 = $2.50).
Think of it like LEGO bricks. If you know the size of one standard brick (the 10%), you can snap together as many as you need to build any percentage.
