How It Works
Oil lamps use oil instead of batteries or electricity. You pour in some oil, usually from a bottle, into the lamp, which has a special cup to hold the oil.
Then you light a wick, which is like a little straw that goes down into the oil. When you light it with a match, the wick gets hot and starts burning, just like when you light a candle!
How to Use It
- Fill up the lamp’s cup with oil, like filling your water bottle at school.
- Light a match, then hold it close to the wick until it catches fire.
- Now watch as the wick burns and makes a warm, glowing light, just like your favorite nightlight but much more exciting!
The brighter the flame, the more light you get, kind of like how a bigger fire in your fireplace warms up the whole room.
Examples
- An elderly person uses an oil lamp to read their favorite book at night.
- A family gathers around a Victorian oil lamp during a candlelit dinner.
