How Light Helps
Using Shadows
Now imagine you're drawing a box. If all sides are the same color, it’s just a flat square. But if you add a shadow on one corner, it feels like you can almost touch it! It's like when your shadow gets longer in the afternoon, it shows where the light is coming from.
So, to make your paintings feel like they're jumping out of the paper, use light and shadows just like you would with a toy or a ball!
Examples
- Using shadows and highlights to make a ball look round
- Adding layers of color to give the illusion of depth
- Drawing a street with lines that get smaller in the distance
