How to Distinguish Between Linear & Nonlinear : Math Teacher Tips?

It’s easy to tell if something is linear or nonlinear, like telling the difference between a straight path and a bumpy one.

Imagine you’re walking on a sidewalk, that's linear because it goes straight. Every step you take takes you forward in the same way, just like when you count numbers: 1, 2, 3... each number increases by exactly 1.

Now imagine you're walking through a park with hills and valleys, that’s nonlinear, because sometimes you go up, sometimes down, and it doesn’t follow a simple pattern. It's more like counting while jumping on a trampoline: 1, 2, 4, 7... the numbers don't increase in the same way each time.

What Makes Something Linear or Nonlinear?

  • Linear means straight, like a line drawn with a ruler, it goes up at the same rate all the time.
  • Nonlinear means not straight, it can twist, turn, and go faster or slower in different parts.

Think of riding your bike on a flat road (linear) vs. going uphill and downhill (nonlinear). One is smooth, the other has changes, just like numbers can behave!
