How the Americas Got Their Name?

The Americas got their name because a famous person from long ago thought they looked just like another place he knew.

Americas is the name of the big landmass that includes North America and South America, think of it like two giant continents playing together in one big neighborhood.

A long time ago, there was a man named Amerigo Vespucci, who liked to travel around the world on ships. One day, he sailed across the ocean and saw these new lands that looked different from anywhere else he had been before.

He thought they reminded him of Italy, his home country, because the shape of the land or maybe the way it looked from above was similar to something familiar. So, he wrote about this amazing discovery, and people started calling the new land America, after his name.
