Science explains monster waves by showing how small ripples can grow into huge waves when they meet up just right.
Imagine you're in a bathtub full of water. If you flick your finger once, the water makes a little ripple. But if you and your friend both flick your fingers at the same time, from opposite sides, the ripples bump into each other and make a bigger wave! That's kind of like what happens with monster waves in the ocean.
How waves team up
Sometimes, waves that are already big come together. When two or more waves meet, they can pile on top of each other. This is called constructive interference, which means "building up", just like when you stack blocks one on top of another!
If this happens in the ocean, it can make a single, super-tall wave, sometimes as tall as a house! These are called monster waves because they look so big and powerful.
Why monster waves happen
The sea is full of different kinds of waves. When the right ones meet at the right time and place, they team up to create something amazing, a monster wave that can even surprise ships on the ocean!
