How pollution is changing the ocean's chemistry | Triona McGrath?

The ocean is like a giant glass of water that’s getting mixed up with messy stuff because of pollution.

Imagine you have a big bowl of fruit punch, it's sweet and colorful. Now, someone starts pouring in lots of soda, saltwater, and even some chemicals from a broken bottle. The fruit punch changes color, gets bubbly, and might even taste different. That’s what’s happening to the ocean: pollution is changing its chemistry, like adding too many ingredients to your favorite drink.

How pollution affects the ocean

Think of the ocean as a big bathtub. When we pour in carbon dioxide from cars and factories, it’s like pouring in fizzy soda, it makes the water more acidic. This can hurt animals like sea urchins and corals, who need just the right balance to grow strong.

Also, when people dump plastic into the ocean, it's like throwing confetti into a pool, it floats around, gets broken down into tiny pieces, and ends up in the food of fish and other sea creatures. That means we might end up eating plastic too!

So pollution is changing how the ocean feels and tastes, and that affects all the life inside it!

  3. Cars and factories add extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, which then dissolves into the ocean.
