How “Perfect” is Perfect Pitch?

Perfect pitch is when someone can hear a sound and know exactly what note it is, like knowing the name of your favorite toy just by hearing it.

Imagine you're playing with building blocks, and one of them makes a "do" sound when you knock it. If you have perfect pitch, you’ll know that “do” is the first note in the musical scale, just like knowing your favorite block is red because it’s always been red.

Not everyone has perfect pitch, and even those who do aren’t always right. It's more like having a super-strong sense of smell, sometimes you can tell exactly what flower it is, but other times you might guess wrong if the air is smoky or foggy.

Think of it like being able to name every color in your crayon box without looking, most of the time, you're spot-on. But once in a while, that blue crayon looks like green to you. That's how perfect pitch works, very good, but not always 100% perfect!
