How is ascorbic acid synthesized?

Ascorbic acid is made by plants and animals using special steps to turn simple ingredients into something powerful, like turning playdough into a superhero.

Ascorbic acid is the name for vitamin C, which helps keep our bodies strong. To make it, some living things use a process that's like following a recipe with just a few key ingredients: glucose and oxygen.

Making vitamin C in plants

Plants are like little chefs who know how to make vitamin C from something they already have, glucose (which is like the sugar we eat). They take the glucose and change it step by step, using some help from sunlight and a few special tools inside their cells. These steps are kind of like mixing colors in paint, each step changes the color (or the type of molecule) just a little bit.

Making vitamin C in animals

Animals also make vitamin C, but they need to work harder. They start with glucose again and turn it into ascorbic acid using special helpers called enzymes. It’s like having a robot friend that does all the hard parts of making a toy for you, the robot is the enzyme, and the toy is the vitamin C.

If animals don’t get enough vitamin C from food, they can’t make enough on their own, it's like forgetting to bring your favorite blocks when you go to play!
