Ocean Currents: The Hidden Engine of Global Climate

The ocean is like a giant, slow-moving river that circles the whole Earth.

Imagine a super-long belt made of water that carries heat from the warm equator up to the cold poles. This movement is called an ocean current.

Think of sunlight as a warm hug. The sun hugs the middle of the Earth the strongest. The ocean water there gets very warm. It doesn't just sit there. It moves. This moving water acts like a delivery truck, carrying that warmth to places that are usually chilly.

When the water gets to the cold poles, it cools down. Cold water is heavier than warm water. So, it sinks to the bottom. This sinking starts a new part of the journey. The cold water travels back toward the equator deep under the sea.
