Zeros as placeholders in decimals help us know exactly where each number lives, just like knowing where your toys are on a shelf.
Imagine you have a jar that can hold 10 marbles. If you put 2 marbles in it, the jar shows 2, but if only 1 marble is there, we need a way to show that space, like an empty spot or a zero. That’s what zeros do in decimals!
Zeros Keep Things in Line
Think of decimals as a number line with special spots: tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. A zero acts like a sign saying “this place is empty, but it still matters.”
For example:
0.2means 2 tenths, like having 2 out of 10 marbles in your jar.0.02means 2 hundredths, like having 2 out of 100 marbles.
Without the zero, we wouldn’t know if it’s 0.2 or 0.02. The zero helps keep everything lined up, just like how your toys stay in their spots on a shelf!
So zeros aren’t hiding, they’re helping us see where each number lives!

- Writing 1.02 shows there are no hundredths, but there is a tenth.
