How Does Thinking Fast and Slow - System 1 & System 2 Work?

Thinking fast and slow means your brain has two ways to work: System 1, which is quick and automatic, like a robot that knows what to do without thinking; and System 2, which is slower but smarter, like a helper who checks the robot’s work.

When You Use System 1

Imagine you're playing with your toys. If you see a red ball rolling toward you, your brain says “catch it!” right away, that's System 1 working. It's fast and doesn’t need to stop and think. You just react, like when you automatically grab the ball before it hits the floor.

When You Use System 2

Now imagine you're trying to solve a tricky puzzle. You have to count the number of shapes or figure out how two blocks can fit together. That's System 2, it takes time and effort, but it helps you think deeper and make better choices. It’s like when you take your time to check your math homework before showing it to your teacher.

Sometimes System 1 makes mistakes, like thinking the ball is going to stop before it hits the floor. That's when System 2 steps in to help you catch those errors, just like a smart helper who checks your work!
