There are actually three kinds of spicy because spicy can mean different things depending on what you're eating and how it feels in your mouth.
Imagine you have three friends who each bring a different kind of candy to school lunch:
- One friend brings sour candy, it ticks your tongue, like when you eat a lemon.
- Another brings hot candy, it burns your tongue, like when you drink something too hot.
- The third brings sweet candy, it tickles your tongue, like when you taste marshmallows.
Spicy food is similar, it can tick your mouth (like sour), burn it (like hot), or even tickle it in a special way (like sweet). Each kind of spicy feels different inside your mouth, just like each candy feels different on your tongue. That’s why there are actually three kinds of spicy, because your mouth can feel them in three different ways!
Examples
- A child learns that hot peppers are spicy, but there are different kinds of spiciness.
- Someone discovers that not all spicy foods feel the same on their tongue.
