Why It Was Made
A long time ago, a man named Joseph McVicker worked in a store where they sold art supplies. He noticed that some of the clay used by artists was really soft and easy to mold. But it wasn’t colorful, just plain gray or white.
He wanted to make something similar but more fun for kids. So he mixed together flour, salt, water, and a little bit of tapioca, which is like the stuff in some kinds of pudding. This made a soft, bouncy, squishy material that could be rolled, stretched, and shaped, just like when you press your fingers into wet sand at the beach.
Why It Was Called Play-Doh
He called it “Play-Doh” because “play” means having fun, and “doh” sounds a bit like “dough,” which is what you use to make bread. That’s why it feels a little like dough when you touch it.
So the truth about why Play-Doh was created is that someone wanted to make something that would help kids have fun by letting them shape and color things just like they do with clay or sand!
