How Does the Tragedy of the Commons Affect Us?

Imagine a big park where everyone can bring their cows to eat grass. The grass is free for all! At first, everything is great. But soon, each person thinks, 'If I add one more cow, the extra food it eats is small, but I get all the money from selling that cow.' So everyone adds more and more cows.

Too Many Cows

Eventually, there are too many cows eating at once. The grass doesn't grow back fast enough. The cows get skinny and hungry, and the park becomes muddy and bare. This is called the tragedy of the commons. It happens when a shared resource runs out because everyone acts in their own best interest.

Saving the Park

How do we fix it? Sometimes, people agree to take turns letting cows rest. Other times, someone puts up a fence and charges an entry fee. This makes sure no one takes too much.

We see this in real life with fish in the ocean. If every boat catches as many fish as possible, there will be none left for the future. It is not about bad people; it is about how we share things that belong to everyone.
