How Does the Roman Senate Compare to Modern Parliament?

The Roman Senate was like a big group of leaders who helped make decisions for Rome, just like people in a modern parliament help make laws today.

Imagine you and your friends have to decide what game to play at recess, you all talk it out and pick the best one. That’s like how the Roman Senate worked: senators, or important people from different parts of Rome, would meet to talk about big decisions for the whole city.

In modern times, people in a parliament do something similar, they debate and vote on laws that affect everyone. But there are differences too! The Roman Senate had fewer people and wasn’t always fair, sometimes the loudest person got their way, even if they weren’t the most thoughtful.

Like a Classroom vs. a Big Meeting

In ancient Rome, the Senate was like a small classroom where only a few kids got to speak. Today’s parliament is more like a big meeting with hundreds of people, each from different groups, just like how you might have teachers and parents helping decide what happens at school.
