How does the ozone layer protect life on Earth?

The ozone layer is like a shield that keeps Earth safe from hurtful sunlight.

What Is the Ozone Layer?

The ozone layer is a thick blanket high up in the sky, made of special molecules called ozone (which are just oxygen molecules with an extra oxygen atom). It’s kind of like the Earth’s sunscreen, it blocks some of the strongest rays from the Sun.

How Does It Work?

Imagine you're playing outside on a hot summer day. The Sun is bright, and it feels warm. Now imagine there's a strong wind that carries some of the hottest parts of the sunlight to your skin, that would hurt!

The ozone layer does something similar but in reverse. It catches some of those hurtful ultraviolet rays before they reach Earth. These rays can damage living things, like making our skin burn or hurting plants and animals. By blocking these rays, the ozone layer helps keep us healthy and safe, just like a big, invisible umbrella over the whole planet!
