Flags are like super cool shirts that countries wear to show who they are.
When a country is born, kind of like when you get a new toy, it needs a flag to represent itself. People choose colors and shapes that mean something special to them, just like how you might pick your favorite color for your bedroom.
How flags come to be
Sometimes, a flag starts with a symbol, like a bird or a lion. These symbols tell stories about where people are from or what they believe in. For example, the eagle on the American flag is like a superhero, it shows strength and freedom.
Other times, flags grow out of old ones. Like when a new country splits from an old one, it might take parts of its parent’s flag and mix them up to make something new. It's kind of like building with Legos, you use pieces from before but make something different.
Flags can change over time too. Sometimes people get tired of the old look and decide to pick a fresh color or add a new symbol, just like how you might want to redecorate your room.
