The ocean stays blue because it absorbs and reflects different colors of light. When sunlight hits the ocean, all the colors go in, but the blue ones come back to our eyes. It’s like when you shine a flashlight through a glass of water, you see blue more clearly than other colors. The deeper the water, the bluer it looks!
Examples
- When you look at a blue sky reflected on still ocean water, it looks like the ocean is also blue.
- A pool of water in your backyard appears bluer when it’s sunny than when it’s cloudy.
