Earth’s weather changes because our planet moves in three wobbly ways.
Think of Earth like a spinning top. It does not just spin in a perfect circle. It wobbles, tilts, and changes its orbit shape. These movements are called Milankovitch Cycles. They control how much sunlight hits different parts of Earth.
The Orbit Shape
Imagine running laps around a track. Sometimes the track is a perfect circle. Other times it stretches out into an oval. When Earth’s path around the Sun is more oval, we get closer to the Sun at some points and farther away at others. This changes how hot or cold it gets.
The Tilt and Wobble
Now imagine holding a globe by the North Pole. If you tilt it more, one side gets more direct sunlight. This makes summers hotter and winters colder. Over thousands of years, this tilt changes. Also, the direction Earth points (its wobble) shifts slowly, like a spinning top that is falling over.
These cycles do not happen overnight. They take tens of thousands of years. When Earth tilts less, summers are milder. Ice caps can grow because snow does not melt completely. This starts an ice age. When the tilt increases, summers get hotter. Ice melts. The planet warms up.
