How Does The Hindu-Arabic Number System Work?

The Hindu-Arabic number system is like having special blocks that let you build any number from 0 to billions, just like building towers with different colored blocks in a playground.

Imagine you have blocks that are labeled from 0 to 9. These are your digits. You can use these digits to make any number, and the trick is how they work together, like stacking blocks on top of each other.

How Position Changes Value

Each digit has a place, just like when you line up for a game, the person in front gets to go first. In numbers:

  • The rightmost digit is the ones place.
  • The next one is the tens place.
  • Then comes the hundreds place, and so on.

So, the number 245 means:

  • 2 is in the hundreds place (so it's worth 200),
  • 4 is in the tens place (worth 40),
  • 5 is in the ones place (just 5).

It’s like having different sized blocks, a small block, a medium one, and a big one. By stacking them in order, you can build any number you want!
