How Does The Expansion of the Roman Empire Work?

The Roman Empire grew bigger because Rome kept making more friends and taking over new places.

Imagine you have a toy box full of your favorite toys. You want to make it even bigger, so you go around the neighborhood and ask other kids if they can join your playgroup. Some say yes, and you all play together. Others don’t want to share their toys, so you take them by force, like when you grab a toy from someone who doesn't want to give it up.

Rome did something similar. They sent soldiers, like strong friends with big sticks, to help them make new friends or take over other places. When they made friends, they let people keep their old ways of living, kind of like how your friend can still wear their favorite hat even if you’re all playing together.

If they took over a place, they often built roads and set up rules so it was easier to control. It's like when you get a new toy, you might need to learn the rules of the game before you can join in.
