How Does The Difference Between: Murmur, Mumble & Mutter Work?

A murmur, mumble, and mutter are all quiet ways of talking, but they each sound a little different, like how your voice changes when you're whispering in different situations.

What's a Murmur?

A murmur is like the softest whisper, it’s almost like your voice is floating on air. Imagine you’re sitting quietly in a library, and you say “hello” really gently so no one else can hear you. That’s a murmur!

What's a Mumble?

A mumble sounds more slurred or unclear, like when you're trying to talk but your mouth is half-full of cereal. It’s not as quiet as a murmur, and it's harder to understand. Think about when you're talking through your nose or with your mouth closed, that’s a mumble!

What's a Mutter?

A mutter is like a grumpy whisper, it's usually quiet, but it feels more angry or annoyed. It’s what you do when you’re mad at something and don’t want anyone to hear you. Like when you're whispering “I hate carrots” under your breath.

All three are soft ways of talking, but they each have a little character of their own, just like how you sound when you're happy, tired, or grumpy!
