The brain uses a kind of filter to decide which memories are important. Imagine your brain is like a toy box, and every memory is a new toy. When you play with the same toys over and over, they become your favorites, and those stay in the box. The other toys get forgotten or tucked away in the back.
Examples
- You remember the first day of school because it was exciting, but you forget what you had for lunch on Tuesday.
- You remember your favorite song because you listen to it all the time, but you forget the lyrics to songs you’ve only heard once.
