How Does The Bee Dance Work?

The bee dance is like a fun game that bees play to tell each other where to find food.

Imagine you're playing tag at the park, and you shout out "Tag! You're it!" to your friend, that’s how bees talk too. But instead of shouting, they do a little dance!

When a bee finds a flower with lots of nectar (the sweet stuff in flowers), it goes back to the hive and starts doing a special waggle dance.

The Waggle Dance

The way the bee dances tells other bees two things:

  1. How far the food is, like how you tell your friend how many steps away the swing set is.
  2. Which direction to go, just like pointing with your finger when you're giving directions!

If the flower is far, the dance goes on longer. If it's close by, the dance is quick and bouncy.

Other bees watch the dance, then fly off to find the food themselves, all because of a little waggle!
